Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - not a bad set of knives for the money
I purchased this set as an intended gift recently, and ended up keeping it for our summer place. I am very surprised at the performance of all the knives, they are almost as effective as my very high priced German ones (you know the name). Despite their having been made in China, the handles are still intact and about the only complaint I have is that two of the "Sabatier" medalions have fallen off the handles. One cannot find a comparable set of knives in a discount store, and these would make an excellent gift for someone who is just getting started or people who will never purchase a "good" knife on their own. They also sharpen well and easily, but not with the sharpener provided. My son, who is a chef, has used them on occasion and although he wasn't as impressed with their performanceand quality as I am, agreed that I got a "hell of a deal". You simply can't go wrong with this purchase. i am now ordering another set (as a gift, once again!).

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Best Cost / Quality Ratio, What a Bargain!
Are they worth it?? Most definitely! But don't expect these knives to be on par with likes of GOOD Henkels or Wusthof. This is an extremely capable set of knives. They are made with high quality materials. Thick steel blades nicely tapered into the handle, give good cut precision without the wander of flexible, thinner blades. Solid rubber-like thick handles give a good grippy feel and control. And, a horizontally-slotted block so you don't carve away at the holes each time you return the knife to its home. But then there's the Chinese craftsmanship that prevents these from being a georgeous set of knives. The finish on these pieces isn't fabulous. The handles, although themselves are nice and ergonomic, aren't attached to the steel blades with TLC. Some epoxy appears in the gaps of the rubber/steel junction. The blades are sharp, but the finishing of the steel is subpar; unevenly ground in places, knicked by a honing/polishing device(?) here and there; all tips come to a nice point though. And finally, under examination, the finish on the block is atrocious. The laquer is unevenly applied, there are large-radius disk sanding grooves across the surface, lots of random knicks and scratches, and lastly, my block has a "nice" 1/4" wide by 6" long putty filled knot along the top/back surface. I could sand this block and refinish it nicer myself. But, like I said, this is under close examination. From ordinary sight angles and distances, the set appears well made and ready for action. I would recommend this set since, in my case, they are replacing a set that cost twice as much and was about half the quality. Given their reasonably acceptable appearance, good weight and balance, sturdy construction, and quality materials I am tatolly pleased with my purchase; and unless you're a knife critic (in which case you should be looking elsewhere anyway), then you should be pleased too. This gets 5 stars simply for its quality/cost ratio. You CAN'T find a better knife set at this price!

Edit: I changed the score to 4 out of 5 stars because the price of this set has gone up considerably since my purchase.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Making good knifes is difficult
Making good knifes is difficult. Making good wooden blocks to store knives, isn't, that is why there are much cheaper. I bought the 14 piece set for $25 during a promotion, and that is what the block is worth. The knifes are not entirely worthless, however, if you cook a lot (and I mean really a lot), think twice about this set of knifes. The steak knifes are o.k., at least to cut grapefruits. The scissors are great. The paring knives don't hold their sharpness long enough. The bread knife is o.k. The vegetable knife is a big disappointment. It cuts sideways, and is almost always blunt.
I guess the wisdom holds true: If something is too good to be true (i.e., getting 14 knives for $25 (or even $80)), then it probably isn't.
